It sounds like something a teenage male would do, though.
It's not particularly unusual in the military, sad to say.
I've spent much time on navy ships with male and female crews. We have what's called "self serve laundry" which consists of a room with 3-4 each washers and dryers that we can sign up to use to launder our underwear and civilian clothing. For us guys, we toss our stuff in and go back to work, returning only to dry it and remove it. For women, it's understood that they bring a book to read and remain with their clothing for the duration of the cycle. If they don't, their bras and underwear will get stolen.
I've seen it happen time and time again.
