The smart people refuse to participate in polls unless it could be construed as “racism”, and therefore mandatory, like surveys at American universities.
Once coerced into participation, the smart person is going to give the answers the media and government want to hear, or else there might be some ‘complications’ and ‘unpleasantness’ surrounding an incidental inquiry by the tax agencies.
Only an idiot would answer media questions without benefit of legal counsel.

I think you're more on point; Germany doesn't have either a 1st nor a 2nd Amendment. People stupid enough to volunteer information to the media that can be used against them shouldn't be surprised if they begin to encounter 'inconveniences', especially on a university campus.

Polls show Obama much more popular here in the US than seems sane to me. People are hard to understand sometimes.

My Mom is 95 but clearly remembers the day in 1934 when her German grandmother received a letter from the side of the family that chose not to emigrate. It was a request for money with a photo of a cousin in Nazi uniform enclosed.
