Not true, they used black men who already had syphilis as a control group. Bad enough, granted.

That isn't quite the case. The medical staff thought they were helping these men who were being studied.

The true ethical lapse came when it was discovered that penicillin would cure the men, and the study director made the decision to withhold the treatment in order to keep the study going.

It is because of many ethical lapses like this (I've read others that are truly hair-raising) that we now have the independent review board system to oversee human studies. Animal studies must also be reviewed for adherence to ethical and humane practices before they can be approved.

Thanks. In any case, whites did not deliberately infect black men syphilis in order to use them as laboratory animals.
