Al Capone tried to come to NOLA and make demands. The head of the local syndicate meet him at the train station with about 7 local "police" officers. They disarmed Al and his bodyguards, broke the hands of the bodyguards, and sent Al and his gang back to Chicago. At least that is how the story goes.
There are only so many ways in and out of NOLA and once you are in the city there are only so many ways you can use to get around because of all the canals and the river.
I’ve avoided the place as much as I can since Katrina. My memories of it feature the vile Mark Morial, Avery Alexander et al. Mitch Landrieu is perhaps even a downgrade from Morial. Anyway, I cannot say I have a finger on the pulse of NOLA anymore. Glad to hear it is not as bad as it was.
I agree with you wholeheartedly about the family orientation of people there. That is pretty much a feature of Louisiana generally.
