I believe these are the Trappists who chose to remain in Algeria to serve their Muslim neighbors. Their story is recounted in the movie “Of Gods and Men.” They are held up as examples of how to get along with Muslims.
No, they are held up as men who served the Berber community until they were overtaken by Arab marauders. Since I know some Berber muslims I can tell you that they are good people; they despise the Arabs who invaded their lands and caused tremendous trouble for them. They are not violent people. I should know, I lived next to them for many years.
