IT'S A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL07.01.16 2:20 PM ET

Mastermind of Istanbul Airport Attack Had Been Georgian Informant, Official Says

Akhmed Chatayev is blamed for planning the deadly attack in Turkey, and an official says he was on the government payroll before returning to jihad. ODESSA, Ukraine — Sometimes the world of terror and counterterror is amazingly small.

The day after at least 43 people were killed and more than 235 injured in a terrorist attack on Istanbul’s international airport, Turkish officials announced the arrest of the alleged mastermind behind the attack: Akhmed Chatayev, an ethnic Chechen from Russia who, in the past, had traveled extensively in Ukraine, Austria and Georgia.

Here in the Black Sea port of Odessa, in Ukraine, Police Chief Gen. Giorgi Lortkipanidze knows all about Chatayev. The general used to be the deputy interior minister in Georgia, and for a while, he says, had Chatayev on the government payroll.

“A few years ago I recruited Chatayev, who was a good informer and negotiator between us and Islamist underground of the Northern Caucasus; with his help we prevented several terrorist attacks on Georgia,” Gen. Lortkipanidze told The Daily Beast in an exclusive interview on Friday.

This if FR. Turn off italians after initial use when quoting somebody -- and before writing your own comment.

Grow a thicker hide, too. You'll find it helpful to yourself when dishing out insults. When it toughens up sufficiently, you may be able to dispense with inclusion of insult entirely, rather than be a daily insult dispenser at the drop of a hat, in dependable knee-jerk fashion response, whenever you may be challenged (rightly, or not so rightly, as the case may be).

Can anyone translate admsmith foreign jibber-jabber?

I think it says 'AdmSmith is a cunning runt' in Cyrillic.

It is "Italics" not "Italians". Your in America, speak the Queen's English. I did not insult anyone, I did insulted the foreign jibber jabber. Do you like foreigners bringing their overseas grudges into America liker he seemed to be.

I was typing on a phone so I neglected to end the HTML code for italics.

The Paris jihadis came from Brussels. I guess we can assume NATO is funneling jihadis to ISIS using AdmSmith’s so called thinking.

Wink: your - you’re (that was intentional tongue in cheek) as was my post to you. I would like to see where I insulted anyone by calling squiggly lines of another alphabet jibber jabber.

Not worth the effort. At least the GOPe now has to hide their campaign to get real conservatives banned. They want a limited war with Russia so that tactical nukes or a few nukes can be deployed. It will cover up the mass deaths occurring in Japan and the off the hook cancer cases starting in the US right now. Hillary the Great is their Savior.

The neoconservatives are now openly supporting Hillary Clinton for President...Brent Scowcroft endorsed her, Robert Kagan is fundraising oh her behalf, etc.

The expectation that the neoconservatives on FR are any different is...misplaced.

Oh they have no problem killing their own. Look at the trail of deaths just the Clinton Cartel has left behind. Senator Cotton is now believed to be asking the Russians for Hillary’s missing 30,000 emails. What could possibly be so important that our own state department refuses to release them and our own NSA refuses to release them ? They both have them, guaranteed. Hillary cannot delete the NSA backups and the State Department has copies of the recipients email.

It happens. The next turn 'em off after using them. Nobody likes them, they are merely tolerated. Like the Irish.

Russia’s Siloviki Driving North Caucasians into the Arms of ISIS, Rights Activists Say

Oleg Orlov, the head of Memorial’s “hot spots” program, said that the actions of the Russian forces in the North Caucasus were radicalizing people there not only by arbitrary acitons but also by creating an unjust totalitarian state to counter another one, “a cure,” he said, that “is no better than the ‘disease’” ( http://www.kasparov.ru/material.php?id=57739E366718F ).

Russian suspect in Istanbul attack: a shy student who found religion

Bulgarov left Egypt on Jan. 13 for Turkey, according to the three Egyptian sources.

Some time after that, he returned to Russia and was interviewed by the Federal Security Service (FSB), which is responsible for counter-terrorism, and had to undergo a lie detector test, according to the relative, who did not want to be identified.

The relative said Bulgarov was then allowed to go home.

“He passed the test, he was fine,” said the relative.

Reuters could not confirm that the interview, a routine procedure in Russia that does not necessarily mean the authorities thought he was a security threat, took place. Local police and the FSB did not respond to requests for comment.
