POULENC: OBOE SONATAThis July 30 performance features Mary Lynch on oboe and Anna Polonsky on piano.
Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) was a full service composer, writing in almost every genre. His best known piece is the 1959 opera “Dialogues of the Carmelites,” whose last scene is the guillotining of an entire convent of nuns at Compiegne by the Reign of Terror because they might have been praying for the soul of the late king. They sing Poulenc’s setting of “Salve Regina” in Latin as they go to their deaths. It’s one of the most wrenching and haunting scenes in all opera. Here is the bonus track. It’s horrifying and chilling because nothing is actually depicted, except through sound. Brace yourself, and have your handkerchief handy. Your screen will go blurry by the end.
Poulenc: “Dialogues of the Carmelites,” finale
This sonata is Poulenc’s last piece, written in 1963, and dedicated to the late Serge Prokofiev. The three movements are marked “Elegy,” “Scherzo” and “Deploration.” Don’t expect too much dissonance from Poulenc. This is a beautiful and heartfelt piece.
