Japan's Supreme Court has upheld the government's blanket surveillance of the country's Muslim community.
The court struck down the second appeal by Japanese Muslim plaintiffs against what they perceive as an unconstitutional invasion of their privacy and freedom of religion.
A 2010 leak of 114 police files revealed nationwide surveillance of Japanese Muslims. The files revealed that Muslim places of worship, halal restaurants and Islam-related organisations across the capital, Tokyo, were being monitored.

Yes . I have one .
I hope that it works out for Japan.
It’s not the muzzies, it’s the Islam.
I lived there for a while, as a child.
Smart practice.
Well...this only means it’s now OFFICIAL. It has been going on for a rather long time, I think.
Japan was always a bit suspicious of outsider religions, not many will believe that the % of Japanese who are Christians now is lower than the freaking Tokugawa Period...!!! (think Shogun).
Yeah, there are a lot of marriages in churches and there are people wearing crosses, but mostly that is “playing around”.
After the Aum ShinRiKyo Nerve-Gas Attack on the Tokyo subway system around 1994, public suspicion of weird cults went up about 50,000% and it was already pretty high.
There have been popular email lists making weird claims on all the onerous LAWS against Islam in Japan and they’re false: you can bring Arabic Korans into Japan, distribute them, etc. You can go to mosques, though they are very few. Muslims CAN own homes, etc.
But:
The barriers against them are non-official BUT VERY STRONG.
It would be VERRRRRY hard for them to find a place to rent, short of working for a large and influential company, foundation, etc. It would be nearly impossible to get a credit card or insurance. The cops would be watching you a lot, would sometimes maybe be interviewing your neighbors, etc.
If for some weird reason you owned a company people would be a little suspicious of your product. People wouldn’t invite you out, probably. They would probably avoid you, be afraid of you and ask you very many stupid/annoying questions.
These “new” measures don’t surprise me, but I strongly doubt they have just started them.
They have been going on, though more secretly, since just after 9/11, I imagine.
Blanket surveillance is needed here.
NIPS= not politically correct.
The rest of the PC world can f off as far as they are concerned. I mean what greater PC values are there than that America/Europe need more Muslims, more gays, more trannys?
Don’t tell me - Sagamihara ?
No imam is an island.
Kami Seya. I went to school for a couple of years in Sagamihara, and then to a french convent school in Yokohama.
Don’t ask me how I knew you had a connection with Sagamihara ! I was never in the military , but lived there for about 9 months at a friend’s house ( ex-Navy ) before I got my own place .
It’s a breathtakingly beautiful country. My father was career Navy.
What years were you here ?
Aum Shinrikyo. It's a doomsday religious cult. They're in Russia also. Ivan is not amused; the Russian FSB conducted raids against them.
57-62.
You should see Yokohama now .
Respectfully, no. Mass deporation of ANYONE professing to be muslim here...citizen or not.
I wish I could! I hate to fly, though. I’m sure that it’s changed more than I could imagine.
BTW - I have been here since 1985 .
