In 2013, the Phoenix City Council created a goal to divert 40 percent of trash from landfills by 2020. To meet that goal, the Public Works Department says outside help is needed.
The council discussed the plan during Wednesday's meeting, and it was clear that not everyone thought the price is right.
I think we should have started smaller and built up," said Councilman Michael Nowakowski.
He voted against the contract which focuses on community outreach and provides incentives for people who recycle.
Before voting no, Councilman Sal DiCiccio said, If the public wants to understand why theyre paying huge water bills, high taxes, its because of things like this. This is almost a $10 million contract given just to let people know about recycling.

+ $1.5 million payout to Union Bosses as part of a backroom deal hidden from the public
On July 1st, these same politicians (Mayor Stanton, council members Deborah Stark, Kate Gallego, Danny Valenzuela, Thelda Williams and Laura Pastor) will claim financial hardship and vote on an increase of your property tax by 26%.
Councilmen Jim Waring, Michael Nowakowski and I voted against that government waste.
As you can see by the way they blew thru your hard earned tax dollars this week, there is no shortage of money. We have a record high surplus of cash. This 26% tax would increase house payments squeezing your family budget.
Oh by the way, this week the Mayor and Council also voted to spend $300,000 of your money to fund a private downtown special interest group who previously pushed a huge tax increase on small business owners.
Remember how you were lied to about the food tax? The politicians are doing it again with the property tax increase.
Just like I helped repeal the food tax, I am just as committed to fighting this huge tax increase on you and your family.
Someone noted last night that low interest rates have allowed and encouraged bureaucrats from the feel good, tree hugging left to spend money we don’t have on stuff that does not produce any increase in value.
Four women and one latino male in favor of waste vs. two waspish men against it. I’d hate to be on the side of the two men trying to reason with the other five. I guess I’d just have to kill myself.
Sorry girls, women are the weaker vessel for a reason, they also have very limited common sense. Their emotions rule over their reason. It is a very bad formula.
If recycling were economically feasible, people would be bidding to buy my garbage. My unpaid labor to sort the stuff wouldn’t be required, either.
Politicians and money, bees and pollen, or worse, cheetah and gazelle.
Why we venerate our Founding Fathers. They gave us a system to prevent human corruption and we let humans corrupt it.
And consider, while on the relationship between crooked politicians and money...consider, the current crop of corruptocrats have overspent by over ten trillion dollars. Conveniently, Americans have about ten trillion dollars in pensions, 401 Ks, etc. how long can they keep their hands off this stash? Not long,I predict.
I thought Arizona had a giant natural landfill site somewhere roughly northwest of Flagstaff.
Maybe they should concentrate on recycling McCain instead?
Around here, the recycling contractor picks the recyclables up, takes the tax money, and trucks a significant percentage of it straight to the landfill. http://thescoopblog.dallasnews.com/2016/02/one-fifth-of-recycling-from-13-area-cities-was-dumped-in-landfills-audit-reveals.html/
Recycling is a scam anyway.
This is Phoenix, not Rio Linda. Of course with representation like that it soon will be.
Will have to find out about that!
Around 1995 I was slightly involved in the Chicago blue bag recycling operation.
Two huge recycling plants.200 MM +
Around mid point, it was announced that Omahu was shutting down their blue bag operation. The last one standing, at the time.
They shut it down ~ 2008.
My boss(owner) was a school chum of a heavy at Waste Management.
I will vote against every one of those idiots. If only more people would, we’d be better off. I’ve always liked Sal, and enjoy watching him talk to those dunderheads on public access. Who the hell would think that a 26% increase in anything was a good idea? Jerks!
