Your cynicism is well-founded. Almost every time elites are toppled, they are soon replaced by new ones as bad or worse. The American Revolution was the exception, unless you define "soon" to include 200+ years. Or unless you include the bloody and deadly Civil War as evidence that the elites were already in control, people be damned. WWII was another exception -- nothing like Imperial Japan or Nazi Germany has arisen, at least in those countries.
The Internet changes everything, possibly empowering the people more than the elites. Without the Internet, the Clinton scandals may have been as well-hidden as Jack Kennedy's licentious behavior.
