I concur. The first bit of any well-written novel is only setting the stage and introducing the main characters and hints at the overall storyline. It being Sci-Fi only exacerbates the problem, IMHO.
I’ll agree and sort of disagree: any novel must be written to market.
Kline knows exactly who his potential readers are.
