They are also rumored to be filming the protests continuously, itching to sue anyone who may harm them.

Not a rumor about the videographer, but true. HOWEVER, they do not sue counterprotestors. They sue the jurisdiction (city, county, whatever) for allowing the violation of their civil rights. Cities etc. have insurance to cover these suits and the ins. cos. settle rather than fight through the court system. It is how the WBC makes their money!!!

I hope the next generation leaves the “church” and absconds with all the money, leaving Shirley Phelps and others of her generation in the “church” with nothing in their old age.

The last time the Phelps group successfully sued their home city of Topeka was around 20 years ago. A lot of people are puzzled as to why the city doesn’t pass some sort of ordinance to curtail their activities = but the answer is the city has decided to completely ignore the Phelps group, to prevent another lawsuit. So, the Phelps group is outside the city council meeting, every Tuesday night...for the last 20 years...trying to get some sort of reaction, with little success. I’ve gotten used to it.

This may explain why they took their show on the road to protest military funerals - new target cities.

BTW, the City of Topeka does NOT have insurance for these types of lawsuits. They are self-insured. IE, when the Phelps were on a roll and successfully sued the city three times in rapid succession, the payments were made from the city general fund. Insurance is just too high for a mid sized city to justify it.
