Where was this photo taken and what is the story behind it?

Vietnam. The rulers of the newly Unified Republic Of Vietnam no longer required the services of the Thompsons and other former US military equipment held in the warehouses of the former South Vietnamese Army, since plenty of their own standardized AK47s were had for their purposes. They also scrapped out some of their own damaged or worn equipment at the same junkyard.
