How Chicago’s Streets Became the Wild West
Wall Street Journal ^ | June 16, 2016 | HEATHER MAC DONALD

Posted on 06/16/2016 12:54:20 PM PDT by reaganaut1

Someone was shot in Chicago every 150 minutes during the first five months of 2016. Someone was murdered every 14 hours, and the city saw nearly 1,400 nonfatal shootings and 240 fatalities from gunfire. Over Memorial Day weekend, 69 people were shot, nearly one an hour, topping the previous year’s tally of 53 shootings. The violence is spilling from the Chicago’s gang-infested South and West Sides into the business district downtown. Lake Shore Drive has seen drive-by shootings and robberies.

The growing mayhem is the result of Chicago police officers’ withdrawing from proactive enforcement, making the city a dramatic example of what I have called the Ferguson effect. Since the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., in August 2014, the conceit that American policing is lethally racist has dominated media and political discourse, from the White House on down. Cops in minority neighborhoods in Chicago and other cities have responded by backing away from pedestrian stops and public-order policing; criminals are flourishing in the vacuum.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel warned in October 2015 that officers were going “fetal” as the violence grew. But 2016 produced an even sharper reduction in proactive enforcement. Failures in city leadership after a horrific police shooting, coupled with an ill-considered pact between the American Civil Liberties Union and the police department, are driving that reduction. Residents of Chicago’s high-crime areas are paying the price.

...

Police officers who try to intervene in this disorder often face virulent pushback. “People are a hundred times more likely to resist arrest,” a police officer who has worked a decade and a half on the South Side told me. “People want to fight you; they swear at you. ‘F--- the police, we don’t have to listen,’ they say.

Coulda knocked me over with a feather. This is what the activists wanted, less of a police footprint.

Well...they got what they wanted, and are surprised that it has turned out as it is?

What is it with liberals? Everything is unexpected, everything surprises them, from governmental economic forecasts to violent deaths due to intentional decreased police presence.

Where does Rahm go to lead Chicago on the weekends?

It started with non-parents pinching off welfare babies and turning them loose on the streets. They are going to ride dirty anyway, so birth control should be mandatory.

It started when the government banned GOD from the public school system.

I thought there was a movement to impeach Rahm.

Oh, yeah.
It’s the cops’ fault.
For all the shooting and killing.

You say they got what they wanted? That is a terrible thing to say. However terrible, what is tragic is there seems to be no protesting the carnage. No street demonstrations, no candlelight vigils, no shouts of “where are the cops?”, no mass meetings of grieving family members.
I saw more outrage over the shooting of a lion and then a gorilla. Two animals were shot and the liberal world went ballistic. The dead and wounded litter the streets of Chicago and (crickets).
Another summer weekend nears. Monday the media will quietly print the roster of DEAD and WOUNDED. There will be the sound of silence.
If, however, a situation requires a shooting BY A POLICEMAN, riots will break out, the media will wake up, and a certain “reverend” will be leading the outraged parade down the street betwenn the burned out buildings.
Oh, well, another weekend in Chicago. Heaven forbid.

You mean to tell me that, once the evil, totalitarian police stopped patrolling, the residents didn’t come out and all sign kumbaya together?!?!?!?!?!

It’s all nonsense. The police in Chicago only arrest “independents” who are not part of the Chicago Government Mob. The Sinaloa Cartel does the dirty work that the government can’t get away with which includes whacking the competition and non-conformists.

Apparently it is what the progressives wanted. I haven’t seen or heard of any meaningful actions to reverse the trend.

Why is the Wall Street Journal slandering the west? The murder rate was 20 times less than Chicago during the “Wild” West without any gun control.

You raise really good points.I agree completely. Lakeview/Wrigleyville has become super crime infested. Last week there were two robberies in the middle of the day - one at a Subway store right near two child care centers. Lake Shore Drive - the jewel of Chicago -is no longer safe. There are no “safe” areas. Muggings on Magnificent Mile at noon. Sad.

Law Enforcement vehicles and uniforms usually include the motto “To serve and protect”.

However (with all due respect to officers) the reality is when you need personal protection NOW and IF you can call 911 - they are only 5 to 50+ minutes away when seconds matter. You can ALWAYS rely on law enforcement to be there when the danger is over to write a (history) report for posterity.

Much of the shootings in Chicago like in other cities are merely “business”, i.e. drug business and control of their business / money / territory. I must admit when drug trade and shootings skyrocketed regionally - most of us realized the shootings were merely “thinning the gene pool”.

Unfortunately, like prisons that contain mostly the stupid and slow criminals that were caught and convicted while the worst criminals are on the outside, the street survivors are the “Worst of the worst”.

Oh, please. This has been going on for far longer than just since Ferguson.
