I read once that a schoolteacher in Kentucky in the 1920s was fired for teaching her pupils that the earth is round—because the Bible refers to the “four corners of the earth” (so it must be flat).
Might be news to some folks that the scriptures weren’t originally written in English. The Hebrew word used, kanaph, usually means something like “extremity.” There’s another word or words that serve better for geometric corners.
