A Georgia homeowner shot in the neck after police went to the wrong house has died, a lawyer for the family said Friday.
William Powell, 63, died Thursday afternoon at Atlanta Medical Center, attorney Keith Martin said.
A preliminary review of the 911 call indicates the three officers who responded had gone to the wrong home and showed up at Powell's house, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.
Powell was armed with a gun and was shot in the neck by one of the officers, authorities said. He had grabbed the gun for protection, not knowing who might be outside in the dark of night, Martin said. A nearby home had been burglarized just two weeks before the shooting, he added.

Well look on the bright side, at least the cops didn’t shoot any dogs unnecessarily, right?
Awkward headline. Even more awkward showing up at the wrong address. Good gosh.
Murderous negligence. Perhaps they’ll get a raise or promotion.
You want to avoid trouble with the cops? Tell ‘em you’re a Trump “protester.”
Hopefully they weren't delayed filling-out any inconvenient paperwork.
Yes it's sarcasm, ya moron
“The king can do no wrong.”
It’s 2016. Someone calls the cops, someone’s going to the morgue.
Police claim the slain man was warned — his wife avers that not a word was spoken.
Maybe cops should realize that their very presence does not negate everyone’s right to be armed, and act accordingly.
They get to whisper low and then shoot, I guess.
Dollars to donuts, some trigger happy cop let off a round into his neck right before or as they gave him a verbal command...
Oops...sorry about that...
Something tells me that this incident will be costly.
And, that just because somebody complained of a crime, it doesn’t mean an armed citizen they meet will be a criminal.
Manslaughter. Charge them.
Didn’t sound like Atlanta cops - they shoot unarmed disabled elderly ladies. Clicked through, and saw that it was Henry County (south suburb/exurb).
I’ll reserve judgement, but this looks like multiple failures to follow procedure. At least this is being investigated by an external agency.
Police should expect that residents of a house they approach are armed. They should clearly and carefully identify who they are, while staying in a covered position. You don’t just show up and demand someone lay down a weapon.
To the citizens who are forced to pay taxes that is. But none of whom have a voice in the practices that precipitate such losses.
“Bang” “Stop resisting” “Bang, bang” “Stop resisting”.
Cops get away with this alllllll the time...in my case; no one was killed, but my wife was felt up. She STILL has nightmares.
