I know this article is old but still, this was some horrible advice at the time.

Peachy: Was not close to being available “right now” when this article was written. Owners stole over half their money to build his house. They’re done.

MakiBox: Went out of business pretty quickly, was in preorder status when article was written. Totally not available “right now”

Phoenix 3D: Total flop. Was not established at all when article was written.

Buccaneer: Again, huge catastrophe, not established when article was written.

Solidoodle: Was established when article was written, so can’t fault you there. They did just go out of business tho.

Haven’t heard of the other ones except PrintrBot which is a good product.
Kickstarter/Preorder does NOT equal “available”, especially in 3D printing.

Yes, it was just a random article I found. I didn't mean for it to be any kind of endorsement.

As I wrote, 3D printing reminds me of the early PC market back in the 70's, when almost everything was a kit. I don't think any of those companies are still in business.

PC's were still a "hobby" back then. It wasn't until Apple and especially IBM got into the market that it really took off. With a defacto standard, and software to support them, they became business tools.

That's what I expect with 3D printing: some level of standardization, and different kinds of materials to serve different markets.
