The pyramidal structures are largely hollow and enclose various antennas and sensors to enhance the ship’s stealth characteristics. Starting to look like the “pagoda” superstructures on WWII Japanese battleships.
As for the bombast about having double the firepower of the Arleigh Burke class, that is hardly surprising since, at over 17,000 tons, it is also nearly double the displacement of the US destroyer. There is a direct correlation between hull volume and munitions (missiles) embarked.
This “destroyer” is really just an updated slightly smaller version of the ex-USSR, now largely out of service, Kirov battle cruiser class. Very dangerous ships but, as others have noted, low availability rates due to power plant engineering.
Funny, I took one look at that bow and thought Kirov. It’s about as distinctive as the launchers on the Slavas.
The Russians are debating doing a rebuild on their lone aircraft carrier and considering replacing the steam powerplant with nuclear power. They evidently have had a lot of propulsion trouble over the years.
Yep, definitely some design influence from the Kirovs evident here. I believe the Russians have finally begun refurbishing and updating the Kirovs, much as we did with the Iowa-class BBs thirty-odd years ago. Great ships for showing the flag, which Putin likes to do.
