McCarthy was next in line to be Speaker of the House when Boehner stepped down. He removed himself from contention for “personal reasons” after other congressmen got letters threatening to spill the beans on a scandal. He then removed himself from contention “for personal reasons.”
Renee Ellmers was named at the time as the personal reason.
Paul Ryan got the job instead.
I have no personal knowledge, just memories of the event. It’s easily googled.

That’s what I understand from a friend/conservative radio host who’s very familiar with McCarthy - he’s in her district.
