Venezuela's economic chaos, critics say is the consequence of failed socialist policies for the last 17 years, especially price and currency controls.
Venezuelan security forces fired teargas at protesters chanting "We want food!" near Caracas' presidential palace on Thursday, the latest street violence in the crisis-hit OPEC nation.
Hundreds of angry Venezuelans heading towards Miraflores palace in downtown Caracas were met by National Guard troops and police who blocked a major road. President Nicolas Maduro, under intense pressure over a worsening economic crisis in the South American nation of 30 million, had been scheduled to address a rally of indigenous groups nearby around the same time.
The protest spilled out of long lines at shops in the area, witnesses said, after some people tried to hijack a food truck. "I've been here since eight in the morning. There's no more food in the shops and supermarkets," one woman told pro-opposition broadcaster Vivoplay. "We're hungry and tired."(continued)

Feelin' the Bern are they?
Exactly.
They ought to rise up against the elites - sooner the better for them
Remember, Pinochet had to kill several thousand Communists, and upwards of 200K fled the country, in order to settle things down enough for the economy to work.
With Venezuela, they don't have the ability to feed their underclass at current oil prices, so they will have to either export them or kill them.
Want food?
Find the guy responsible for the mess and eliminate him. Problem solved.
Will they blame it on American imperialism?
“Im surprised Obama isnt flying them all in as refugees.”
Good grief, don’t give that commie loving president any ideas. We have enough problems. But I do wish all those who love Bernie and Hillary would take a good look at Venezuela and what socialism brings, misery to all.
Only when the lower socialists suffer and “revolt” will their “betters” feel pain.
“theyre all 50 lbs above”
They probably finished eating up the skinny ones.
“The protestors in the pic are yelling for food, but theyre all 50 lbs above healthy body mass.”
I noticed that too.
“Did it ever get this bad when Chavez was leading the country?”
No.
1. Oil prices were still high enough then to prop up their give-aways.
2. Their main hydro-electric reservoir wasn’t nearly empty then.
3. Massive government/crony corruption hadn’t progressed to anywhere near to the degree it is now.
4. “Nationalization” (theft) of essentially all private industry, farmland, and wholesale and retail stores hadn’t yet occurred.
5. Economically insane price controls had not yet been imposed, thus causing inflation to soon run around a couple of thousand percent a year.
6. The oil fields hadn’t yet been fully “nationalized” (stolen)
7. Chavez was still paying foreign oil service companies for their services, so they were still operating the “nationalized” oil fields.
8. Chavez was till paying foreign suppliers for their goods, goods which essentially make up about 99% of everything consumed or utilized in Venezuela.
Former bus-driver Maduro makes Hugo Chavez look like a Nobel Prize winning economic genius.
Fat people get very hungry very quickly when their food is cut off.
Weaning off of high carbs is like trying to get off of heroin.
They need the Greeks to come in and set up shop.
Send them Sean Penn to save the day!!!
Just what I was thinking. Better yet — they are all millionaires — why can’t they kick in some of that capitalist money and buy food for their fellow travelers??
