One of Europes wealthiest villages is refusing to accept any asylum seekers - and has instead voted to pay a fine of £200,000.
Fears women and children could be at risk from sex attacks as well as the disruption to their peaceful way of life has led the super-rich of Switzerlands alpine resort of Oberwil-Lieli to vote no in a referendum to accept just ten migrants.
The picturesque village, where 300 millionaires make up 2,200 population, they all used their financial muscle to reject a Government imposed quota.

Safety for me, but not for thee.
“Refugees” from Eritrea are being sent to Switzerland? Not getting a lot of bang for the buck out of all that EU tax money, are they?
Good for them!
Switzerland is not a member of the EU.
Wouldn’t you if you could?
I know I would.
I am not sure what your post is saying. I am happy for this town. What are you really trying to say?
Correct you are. It’s their own tax money either way, though, isn’t it?
. . . which makes me wonder what authority they have to impose any fine on a village in Switzerland.
Switzerland does participate in the Schengen Area
Provisions in the treaties of the European Union
The legal basis for Schengen in the treaties of the European Union has been inserted in the Treaty establishing the European Community through Article 2, point 15 of the Treaty of Amsterdam. This inserted a new title named "Visas, asylum, immigration and other policies related to free movement of persons" into the treaty, currently numbered as Title IV, and comprising articles 61 to 69.The Treaty of Lisbon substantially amends the provisions of the articles in the title, renames the title to "Area of freedom, security and justice" and divides it into five chapters, called "General provisions", "Policies on border checks, asylum and immigration", "Judicial cooperation in civil matters", "Judicial cooperation in criminal matters", and "Police cooperation".
I think that too many Europeans agree with these politicians. Almost half of this town wanted the refugees. Everyone is afraid of being considered racist. I would like to know how many Muslims in their own countries feel this ethical dilemma and would welcome hordes of nonMuslims into their countries.
To clarify -
the fine is a Swiss fine for not accommodating the refuges assigned to it by the Canton. It is hardly “alpine” or even “rich”.
Also, this is old news (2015).

+1
It sure is, and good on them. It’s just not “EU tax money” they pay.
Which “they” do you mean? It’s not the EU, it’s their own Swiss gov’t.
The Swiss still have border controls - and good luck with trying to “just move there as you like”. Ain’t happening.
Gotta admire the Swiss!
They just saved themselves a lot of money and heartache. That was a good investment.
In my European travels I have found the Swiss display the most common sense of all the countries. They seem less emotional in their thinking than the others.
H3ll, they won't even welcome Muslim refugees unless they are servants, slaves or girls near puberty purchased as brides.
What does that tell you?
