Barack Obama on Friday paid tribute to the "silent cry" of the 140,000 people killed by the world's first atomic bomb attack and sought to renew attention in his unfulfilled vision of a world without nuclear weapons, as he became the first sitting U.S. president to visit Hiroshima.

"Death fell from the sky and the world was changed," Obama said, after laying a wreath, closing his eyes and briefly bowing his head before an arched monument in Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park that honors those killed on Aug. 6, 1945, when U.S. forces dropped the bomb that ushered in the nuclear age. The bombing, Obama said, "demonstrated that mankind possessed the means to destroy itself."

The deadliest single bomb raid in history was when the US firebombed Tokyo. Estimates are over 100,000 deaths.

Does Obama even know that Japan tested their own nuke in February 1945, months before we tested one?
The only reason Japan didn’t nuke us first was lack of enough uranium to make a second bomb.

When will Obama wax poetic about events during WW-II at Bataan or Nanking?

Tierney was in his office on the fifth floor of the Dai-Ichi Insurance Building in Tokyo. This was the same floor where MacArthur's suite was situated.[2] Tierney reported that when the emperor arrived, MacArthur refused to admit him or acknowledge him, and the pivotal moment passed. Many years later, Tierney made an effort to explain his understanding of the significance of what he claimed he had personally witnessed: "Apology is a very important thing in Japan. [...] It was the rudest, crudest, most uncalled for thing I have ever witnessed in my life."[2] Whether true or not - issues which might have been addressed were allowed to remain open, and unanticipated consequences have unfolded across the decades since then.[4][5]

Thanks for sharing the link... Interesting stuff... by not allowing closure the 'Japanese ways' were degraded... it might have help Japan in the long run ...

Well said 82. (The Russian angle is not spoken of to much either for some reason). The first Bomb did not convince the sneaky Japs to give up. Right after that first one went BOOM, Harry Truman gave his “If they do not accept our terms of surrender they can expect a rain of ruin from the air the likes never seen before on Earth” speech. (A ‘Rain of Ruin’....Hehehe, I love that line!!) They still would not quit so Harry fed ‘em another one! BOOM again! That did the trick!
