Airport screening delays have caused more than 70,000 American Airlines (AAL.O) customers and 40,000 checked bags to miss their flights this year, an executive for the airline told a U.S. congressional subcommittee on Thursday.

I’m no fan of the TSA but you need to get to the airport early.

They were reporting on the national NBC news at 5:30 (CDT) last night that United (not American?) had those figures of 70,000 missed flights and 40,000 luggage items disrupted. If both American and United had these numbers, at what point is it cost effective for the airlines to put forth some solutions?

I personally think that the TSA lines would be smoother and faster if more people checked more luggage. This would also improve boarding times. If the airlines did not charge for checked baggage, would this help?

OTOH, I also personally believe that what we are seeing from the TSA is an intentional slow-down, the means to an end for union benefits of some type.

Standing on line for 90 minutes at the TSA checkpoint gives people plenty of time to contemplate how great Single Payer healthcare would be.

I’m one of those that doesn’t check bags anymore. If I have more than a small bag I send it ahead via USPS. It’s cheaper than checked bag fees.

I don’t want my luggage lost.
I don’t want someone pawing through my bag.
When I get off the plane I don’t want to wait on my luggage.
They charge for checking my bag.

I finally learned how to pack when we went on our trip to Europe last year, and didn’t need to check in any luggage, and it lasted two weeks.

The key...Quick Drying Clothes. I would quickly wash my clothes in the sink and they would dry overnight.

More seats for the non-rev passengers. They always get there early.

“I’m no fan of the TSA but you need to get to the airport early.”

Well just how early does one need to arrive at the airport to have time to get through the TSA groping squad? 2, 3 hours?
I fly for business and have acquired over 750,000 miles on various airlines. TSA is a seriously flawed security program.

We were told to arrive 2 hours before our flight. We arrived 3 and 1/2 hours before. TSA took so long we missed our flight while our checked bags made it. If you ask me the situation that can cause checked bags on plane but not passenger is very dangerous.

A few years ago, I remember reading an article concerning one of the airports in NY. The people waiting to board the plane were watching the ground crew open up checked baggage and pawing through it for any valuables that they might want. This was in plain view; what are they doing behind closed doors?

My daughter had every electronic device stolen from her and her children’s bags when she checked them. It had to be the baggage guys. Luckily most of them were paid for with our American Express and after she gave them a copy of the police report (yes, she filed one) they reimbursed at about 80%.

The airlines are putting up with this utter incompetency and allowing their customers to miss flights. Eventually the customers will find an alternative.

Personally I refuse to fly commercial. I will not willing submit myself to the NKVD and surrender my Rights just for walking through the doors of an airport. Piss on them and the airlines, may they go broke quickly so this whole mess can be torn down and rebuilt into something that works.

How is it cheaper? How much does a week sized suitcase cost? Also, USPS is not always reliable and UPS is. What are the cost differences? On the plane it’s only $25/30 a bag.

If I’m already carrying a bag on board I don’t have to ship a weeks worth or full sized suitcase amount. Just what won’t fit in the carry on. USPS flat rate and the other reasons are huge.

You must have been so sick of your clothes that you threw them away after the trip! But great idea if you can stomach always wearing the same thing. Packing light is genius.

Checked bags should be free.

Carry on should cost $5,000 each.

I agree!!!!!!!

I always check as much as I can and have never lost anything. I take one backpack and a tiny cross body purse onto the plane. The backpack has two iPads, a bag of toys and fun things for the little one, plenty of snacks, change of clothing for her (she’s a puker on planes, joy, but she is getting good at puking quietly into bags), any meds or emergency stuff.

I DESPISE all the people shoving the huge bags into the overhead compartments and struggling to get them out at the end. Ugh. And now there isn’t near enough room so most people are stuck in the tunnel with all their bags, airline people now having to take them one by one down the stairs to the baggage front, like we do with strollers and wheelchairs. Then they have to stand in the tunnel after the flight and wait for them to come up one by one. STUPID.

I hate flying anyway these days. Tiny seats with strangers basically on top of you. It’s uncivilized. I love being up in the air but I hate being shoved in like sardines. I’m not rich enough to fly business, which isn’t much bigger - it’s like coach used to be.

I always check as much as I can. I carry a small bag with iPad, laptop, snacks and reading material and any “must get there” items. The bulk of clothes, hygiene and any “non-essential” items get checked. I’d rather wait by the baggage carasoul for a bit then try to stuff a bag in the overhead bin.
