Why I am belaboring this? Because the existence of polar bears and grizzly bears proves nothing about the future climate of Earth though it may speak to climates past.

From the author: “Mr Ishalook had actually shot a rare cross between the two species, who normally live in very different climates.”

The writer is wrong. These are not two species and the fact that they can breed proves that they are not. At some point in the past they had a common ancestor. Perhaps some of the “bears” went north and some went south were they each under went some adaptations based on the DNA already present in the original “bear” ancestor.

From Wikipedia: Ernst Mayr’s definition, known as the Biological Species Concept (BSC) of a species as “groups of actually or potentially interbreeding natural populations, which are reproductively isolated from other such groups”.

My guess would be that a period of cooling caused the bear group stranded in colder climates to adapt. Maybe the grizzlies are closer to the original bear. Sorta like my cousins 6 generations in the hills are a different species than those of us moved to the flatlands! (no jokes please)

But who knows? To use two bears mating as proof that the climate is getting warmer is ridiculous. Warmer than when? Sorta like saying that white people interbreeding with red people in North America is proof of global warming. After all it wouldn’t have happened if the glaciers had not receded.

Polar bears and grizzlies inhabit the northernmost shores of Alaska and Canada. Together. Both species are regularly seen in the North Slope oil patches in Alaska. They mated? No surprise. As an old Eskimo lady from Barrow once told me as I was admiring her blue-eyed, blond-haired granddaughters: “We’ve got a couple of Norwegian whale hunters in the wood pile.”

If the polar bear knows how to drive a Hybrid, he can leave the AC on.
