Well, they don’t rot, and it’s a pain to bring them down, so yeah they probably do make good landmarks.

It’s more like their soft tissue slowly evaporates (or sublimate, to be precise) up there. They start looking rather gross...but yes, they are probably very good landmarks.

And bringing them down is an incredibly difficult task, as even the best climbers and Sherpas are operating right on the edge of human capability...so add a 180 pound stiff, and I cannot even imagine the difficulty.
