Dropping a flare into the toilet in the operations deck would burn through the controls and render the plane uncontrollable. It would crash. The crew has access to flares.
Also venting a small bottle of oxygen in a suitcase, then igniting would also burn through the decks, but these are less reliable methods.
Unless he wanted it to look like equipment failure, and not suicide.
