A proposal to include women in the military draft, supported in Congressional testimony by the heads of the Marine Corps and Army, was stripped from the National Defense Authorization Act by a close vote of the House Rules Committee this week. But agitation for universal military conscription will continue, sometimes from the left, so so that Americans feel the burden of ongoing military operations against Islamic militants, will not go away.
After 23 years of military service, it is clear to me that a universal draft is not essential, and indeed would be harmful to our national security.
Asking everyone to serve would be a disaster. Assume you put in a draft of every high school graduate. Approximately 3.9 million people turn 18 each year in the United States. Say of those, 80% are fit for military service (i.e., meet height/weight requirements, no issue with narcotics use, no criminal issues), you are talking of induction of 3.2 million people a year. This is a World War II level of forced public service when we are not at war with major powers.
If this is a two-year draft enlistment (what was used in Vietnam, as opposed to the duration during WWII), the armed forces will have to in-process and train them. The Army (and the other services) dont have the facilities to in-process that many men and women right now. Can you imagine the cost of bringing online multiple basic training posts throughout the county? Currently we induct approximately 200K a year across all four branches of service, enlisted and officers. A draft could increase this by more than a factor of 15!

Gee now that women are proposed for the draft, we dont need it anymore.
Amen.
I couldn’t imagine parents turning their children over to the government at age 18; there is no reason to trust our government (in case the implementation of the war in Vietnam didn’t make that clear).
Imagine a grandson of a Vietnam vet being drafted while our government is in bed with the communist government there that killed grandpa...
Who is calling for a draft? There has been selective service registration for decades.
Any war requiring a draft would be over before we could get the lottery started.
The country that supported and used the peacetime draft is gone; young people who don’t want to show up for part-time job aren’t going to turn over their lives for a couple of years to a government with suspect motives at best.
When the dissent in the ObamaCare ruling pointed out that the law fundamentally changes the relationship between the government and citizens (forcing them to buy something like this), it was well said; our government is now the oppressor of the average citizen, and I wouldn’t expect many people will tolerate call-up notices.
If I received one for myself or my sons I’d toss it in the trash without giving it a second thought. Defending our country is one thing; “nation-building” in some Third World toilet where everyone hates us is quite different.
The draft failed because of stupid foreign policy, not bad citizenship. I am not advocating being a felon. But when the government started waging war without declaring it we started down a slippery slope.
Not only will dumping the social engineering make the armed forces more capable of doing their real job, more people would be willing to enlist. As it stands now, I would not want to see the wholesale conscription of 18 year olds for indoctrination, followed by being sent into combat with substandard training in real military matters.
With libs controlling the levers of power, any draft would only be used for indoctrination of lib ideals. In the end, you'll have libs' libs, not men's men. Bank on it.
OR we could just stop deploying troops overseas and concentrate on securing our own borders. Just a thought...
A draft may be required some day, but not now and I can’t see that one will be required in the foreseeable future.
Women crave equality, therefore, they should be required to register for the draft.
But I thought feminists wanted equality.
That's what I said in comment #31. This isn't AMERICA that I grew up in.
As was once said, “citizens not slaves”.
With independence we became American citizens instead of British subjects.
Wait till the big war comes—and it will, just as God made little green apples—a big war will come—A big war is one we can lose—and face occupation and control by another nation. Then we will need all the men we can use to keep our freedom.
I had an extremely contentious discussion with a Freeper the other day who was castigating me for linking women in combat and the draft.
This is why you see so many leftists pushing the draft.
I disagree. I believe “teaching them a lesson” by including them in the draft is cutting off our nose to spite our face.
News flash! We lost the "Culture Wars"!
Perhaps. But that doesn’t mean I will accept it. Perhaps I am to be condemned as the dinosaurs were, by changing times.
Perhaps. But it doesn’t mean I have to go along with it.
