Can’t agree with the piece. Political Islam was fundamentally a creation of the British in concert with the Arab revolt from the Ottoman Turks. Maybe even before, with the notions of Arab nationalism were percolating in the 19th century. But the full monte began with the Arab rebellions to the Turks. This had the effect of solidifying the chauvinistic notions of Arabic history with the strident imperialist notions of Islam.
Haj Amin al-Husseini an Arab nationalist merged this nationalism with his virulent hate of Jews and any notion of a Jewish State. And so the merging of anti-Zionism with Islam was launched. The birth of the Mad Mullahs was an outgrowth of this festering anti-Jewish ‘ideology’ and Islam with a decidedly Persian turn in Iran.
