Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon (Likud) announced on Friday morning that he is quitting politics, following Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's decision to hand his portfolio over to Yisrael Beytenu head MK Avigdor Liberman so as to bring his party into the coalition.
"This morning I let the Prime Minister know that due to his conduct and recent developments, and due to a lack of confidence in him, I am resigning from the government and from the Knesset and taking a timeout from political life," said Ya'alon.
Ya'alon's resignation is particularly dramatic as Liberman has not yet formally been given his portfolio as Defense Minister, and there had been speculation that Ya'alon would be named Foreign Minister in exchange.
On Thursday night Netanyahu spoke with Ya'alon on the phone and told him that "nothing is determined yet," but apparently Ya'alon was not willing to wait it out and be replaced.
His resignation comes after Opposition head MK Yitzhak Herzog (Zionist Union) invited him to join his leftist party on Thursday night.
Ya'alon's resignation will bring Temple Mount activist Yehuda Glick into the Knesset as an MK, given his placement on Likud's Knesset list. Glick survived an assassination attempt by an Arab terrorist back in October 2014, miraculously recovering after being shot four times at point blank range.

The Hand of G-D is so clearly in this. All of the western left and Egypt sought to bring in Labour, to G-D forbid harm Israel. And Hashem, G-D, who makes all things happen, answered them. Yisroel Oseh Chayil, Israel brings strong life.
Netanyahu has been in power for a long time - maybe too long. Every politician has enemies, and N. looks like someone who has to stitch together ever more precarious deals - going outside his own party to make a power base.
If Netanyahu’s adventurist Syrian policy fails, or if the Israeli economy gets a jolt, then he may have to finally pack up and leave.
We are so thankful that Bibi is in again.
Is Yehuda Glick closely related to Caroline Glick’s husband?
I believe he is her husband, though I’m not sure.
It looks like a lame duck leftist bitter enemy President and an enigmatic, but friendly likely incoming President Trump (making behind closed door promises?), plus BDS finally unleashed, plus, as I say, a completely unreasonable western Left, have all coalesced to drive Bibi to give the Right a chance. It’s long past time he walked the walk.
They are probably related, but after some digging I learned that Glick is Caroline’s maiden name. She married a Jerusalem attorney named Ephraim Katzir in 2013.
Yehuda Glick is an American-born Israeli, and a rabbi. He is Exec. Dir. of Temple Mount Heritage Foundation, working for Jews’ right to pray on the Temple Mount. An attempt was made on his life in Jerusalem last year (he was shot 3 or 4 times and survived).
He is slated to become the next MK for the Likud party after Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon quit. To me, this is good news.
Yaalon quitting is good news, too. The way he was trying to Zimmerman-ize that poor kid was nauseating.
