New U.S. Census Bureau estimates say Detroit’s population continued its decline, knocking it off the list of the nation’s 20 most populous cities.
Figures released Thursday say Detroit’s population was 677,116 last summer, down 3,107 from the previous year and putting in 21st on the list. The Detroit News reports the Census Bureau says the last time Detroit wasn’t in the Top 20 was 1850, when it was 30th.

This is about the same as having an open border. Trump needs to wall in Detroit and a few other cities along with it.
This is the first I have ever heard of that. My mom was born in Detroit in 1917. My dad moved there to work in 1929. I don't ever recall them mentioning those events. My mom moved out to the suburb of Plymouth in 1983 after my father died. It's too late to ask now. Mom died last year. If I can remember to, I'll have to ask a couple of aunts if they have any recollections.
I was in grade school during the '67 riots and half way through high school when they started talking about busing kids.
Actually the election of Coleman Young as Mayor killed Detroit.
It delivered a very clear signal to whites that “You are not welcome here. I am going to do everything in my power to take revenge on you.”
They began fleeing in droves. Creating a city in which blacks ultimately did not want to live either.
Wow, Charlotte NC has over 200,000 more people than Detroit?
Heck all motor city needs is infusion of a $45 billion ‘investment’ and appoint Stephanie RawlingsBlake as mayor. Prosperity would ignite the city!!!
Indeed it is but 20 years from now you will not recognize Detroit based on its current state.
Properties surrounding the downtown area have been snatched up by investors and the trend is expanding outwards with all the abandoned lots up for sale and the city's effort to tear down all the abandoned houses.
There is definitely a transformation going on that folks here don't understand or recognize since they've never been in downtown Detroit.........thus their constant ridicule.
If I were young and had the means, I'd start buying the vacant lots further out and wait until they come in demand..............which they eventually will.
The decline of the auto industry has a lot to do with foreign competition.
The success of foreign competition has a lot to do with globalization-related factors, but also a great deal to do with the quality of the cars produced in Detroit and the slowness of our auto industry to innovate in response to foreign competition.
BTW the population of Detroit in 1850 was only 21,019.
There has to be a political transformation first.
No it doesn't as evidenced by the election of our Republican Gov. Snyder.
The only democrat strongholds left in this state are Flint, Bay City, Saginaw (all UAW towns) and across the state at Grand Rapids...........
In the 2016 election, I predict this state will vote overwhelmingly for Trump..............
There are hidden traps, as we’ve seen in Flint. Infrastructure problems galore. That’s the first thing cut in the nanny states. Let those bridges and roadways age, gotta keep paying the riff raff off.
I’m sure with Detroit gentrification will come some form of fiscal conservatives resentful of democrats, but I think you over estimate the value. As so long as a good % of the population is living in free housing, food stamps, welfare and whatever other program is available, it will be difficult to see a decent return in a modest period of time.
The small things will grind you down. The crime, the insurance, the city bonds and taxes, the regulations or perhaps your investment falls within an imminent domain claim.
We really need to trade Michigan to Canada for more pacific coast property. Just being silly.

I just read the quickie version of the riots....of course, it was the whites...and of course they threw in the “historical” abuse by whites against black women children....what a crock..
however, I'm with you...eventually the hard workers will move there...be it Chinese, or Vietnamese, or Russians....I'd buy property if I had the money too....

There was an influx of blacks migrating from the south in order to man the production assembly lines in the automotive plants at that time and housing was needed. That was the only available land at that time that was available for housing...........
"Downhill from there"? Not hardly, the blacks who migrated to Detroit for the auto industry jobs eventually were able to purchase houses in their respective neighborhoods and became productive members of society along with the Italians, the Poles, the Irish, and the other immigrants who came to Detroit for a better life.

Eh. Everyone got the diagnosis wrong. Detroit had placed all their eggs in one basket. When the auto industry was decimated, so did the jobs. They need to do what Pittsburgh did, reinvent itself which the Steel City did successfully with a high tech medical care industry and a thriving university scene.
It's not as bad as that.
It is true, though, that the population now is as low as it was a century ago, around the time of the First World War.
The Black population of the city has been declining over the last twenty years, though not as fast or for as long as the White population's been declining.
Sounds like you really like the 'progress' that's been made in Detroit since 1942. I'll bet you've really had some fun on "Devil's Night". Buy some of those $50 houses?
Since 1942? You seem to have overlooked Detroit's contribution to WW-II with the B-52's and the country's entire auto industry until the influx of the foreign autos.
Without the "progress" of the Detroit auto industry, you'd still be wrasslin steers and buckin' yer broncos........
Detroit is growing once again despite your ignorance of the changes going on. But I suspect that's due to your own problem with the illegal Mexicans that are flooding your state.............
