It’s been many years, but there was a local news broadcast from a San Francisco airport that got shown back east.
A very serious female reporter asked an English speaking Chinese lady from Singapore what she thought of the controversial practice of using the term “Oriental” rather than “Asian” when referring to a person.
The lady from Singapore had no clue it was considered controversial, and said so. Furthermore the Chinese lady said she, and everyone she knew, referred to themselves as Oriental when speaking English.
She also was emphatic she did not want to be referred to as “Asian”. From her tone she clearly thought it was an insult.
Just another example of politically correct elites forcing their views on others.
In British English (not American English), Asian may refer more towards Pakistanis and Indians rather than Chinese.
People I have known who were of Japanese descent ALWAYS referred to themselves as Orientals.
