Why Trump tap dances on tax returns
WND ^ | Larry Elder

Donald Trump has reason to be reluctant to release his tax returns. In a New York Times piece about Ben Rhodes, President Obama’s deputy national security adviser, Rhodes cynically explains that today’s journalism consists of young people whom he flat-out describes as ignorant. “The average reporter we talk to is 27 years old,” Rhodes said, “and their only reporting experience consists of being around political campaigns. That’s a sea change. They literally know nothing.”

What do 27-year-old reporters know about how wealthy big-business people file their taxes? In the real world, moguls like Donald Trump hire accountants and tax attorneys to file what are known as “aggressive” returns – seeking every possible deduction, exclusion, tax break or deferral.

Given this, Donald Trump is likely audited nearly every year, with the IRS settling with him on some of these issues, often for less than the IRS initially claimed he owed. If Trump releases his taxes now, the IRS – to avoid embarrassment or public criticism that they are giving a rich guy a break – might be reluctant to negotiate down from what they initially argued he owes. Therefore, Trump is likely telling the truth that his attorneys advised him not to release his tax returns until after the audit had been settled.

The people who want to see Trump’s tax returns aren’t going to vote for him anyhow. And the rest of us don’t give a damn what’s in them

He should NOT release them.

In a six foot high stack of income tax returns, there is bound to be SOMETHING that political foes could pick apart.

What I'm interested in is this: Did he pay the taxes he owes? Given that he's been audited for 15 straight years, my belief is that he did.

I'm not interested in other details.

...we all know now that the IRS is part of the thug wing of the Democrat party.

True.

AND I suspect - - from reporting already out there - - that the IRS has leaked Trump's information to Romney, the MSM, Democrats - maybe even to the haters at the State Department and National Review.

Trump doesn't owe those people anything. Nothing - not even the time of day.

Trump shouldn't release his taxes. People who believe in Trump will rejoice in his giving the finger to the haters in the IRS, Democrat Party and the GOP Establishment. Let 'em beg...

How about he releases his tax returns when Hillary releases her health records?

why should Trump allow the IRS free consulting by releasing his returns before the audit is complete? You have every leftist attorney looking at the and giving opinions. Just shut up about the tax returns, heck I wanna see Obama’s high school, college and scholarship/grant records!

You're right. Did he pay them - that works for me.

I don’t know anyone who is particularly interested in a candidates tax returns.

It serves as opposition research fodder.

What I have said for months. In an audit situation you do not give the IRS any reason to re-think its position.

What does the current law call for?

Does Trump-—OR ANYONE—have to open up their tax returns?

OR do they only have to submit a balance sheet???

Anyone’s taxes/income can change dramatically from year to year. Look at athletes-—high years, then next to nothing. Same thing for entertainers.

ONE year doesn’t show a thing.

All this yapping from people that refuse to demand the text of speeches the Clintons have been giving behind closed doors for millions of dollars.

Neither one would get a penny from me for all the speeches they have ever given.

Financial disclosure reports are required by the FEC and Trump has made them all.

To my knowledge, that is all that is required.

Trump has stated he has been audited by the IRS for the past 15 years.

Perhaps there are two reasons these 'honest men' wish to cast their eyes on these returns... your reason and the fact that they, too, would like some pointers on how they might find a few tips on how they could get by with paying less in taxes than they do at this time. Free advise from TRiUMPh with no one being the wiser.

I don’t think he should pay taxes. He creates jobs.

Without the tax returns, we don’t know what anyone is actually paying.

If the law said that no business with employees has to pay income tax - corporate income tax? individual income tax by the proprietor? - that would certainly be different.
