The paving stones are red brick, and the space has been known unofficially as Red Square for generations. The title was ironic at first.

They paved the square with red bricks back in 1969 during a renovation, prompting the editor of the student paper to start calling it that and it apparently stuck. It was the at the height of the Vietnam war protests, when anything commie was very trendy to young skulls full of mush.
Myself and a few friends were long haired rednecks at the time and our saying was, "Peace, or we'll stomp you hippie losers".
