One of my relatives in NC was supposed to work that but wound up not doing it, the history is rather garbled.
I’ve camped and hiked the areas around Joyce Kilmer and Snowbird creek in Graham County in the far western nook of NC.
This is one of the areas where the Cherokee hid to avoid being taken to Oklahoma. Rough country to say the least.
