Washington (CNN)Republican officials who oppose Donald Trump as their party nominee have spent the last few days -- ever since the withdrawal from the race of Sen. Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich -- wondering if there is anything they could have done to prevent this outcome. Top officials of the Cruz campaign are convinced there is one specific step that could have stopped Trump -- and they blame Sen. Marco Rubio for not taking that step.
In early March, it became clear that Trump was well on his way to the nomination and would even likely defeat Rubio in his home state of Florida's March 15 primary. According to several sources close to Cruz, the Cruz campaign conducted several secret polls to see what the impact would be if Rubio joined Cruz as his running mate, with Cruz at the top of the ticket.

This is BS. Primary candidates for president don’t HAVE running mates. They win by either getting or stealing enough delegates to win. Cruz could do neither so ... It’s Rubio’s fault or maybe Fiorina’s fault or who knows?
I can’t believe I voted for this turd in 2012.
The Cruz camp needs to calm down, all the recriminations aren’t helping his political future.
Cruz could have stopped Trump if be had taken the side of the Constitution regarding his TPA and Iranian nuclear treaty.
Like o am a, Cruz cannot allow the possibility that *he* did anything wrong. He has to have a scapegoat.
Ah, but the strawberries, that’s, that’s where I had them, they laughed at me and made jokes, but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt, with geometric logic
I was referring to his votes.
Be quiet and go away, Ted, and no Marco wouldn’t have helped you either.
We don’t want to stop Trump, we want to stop your party and the people in it, mkay.
I can’t express my level of disappointment in Sen. Cruz.
It is apparent from what Rush has said and some other articles that Cruz was certain he was going to get the full conservative vote, but then Trump came in and swept a majority of that group. Cruz psychologically never seems to have recovered from that snub.
One serious negative that was not considered by either Cruz or Rubio - the machine behind Herself would have trumpeted the “Natural born citizen” contention for both Rubio and Cruz so loudly, it would have drowned out all the rest of the dialogue. The charge, whatever it may have been, need not be proved, but the impression left in the air would poison any further discussion.
Never mind that the Current Occupant could not come with an authentic birth certificate, but one based only on hearsay testimony, with obvious errors that gave strong evidence of having been Photoshopped. That was old news and the “birthers” never conclusively proved the case, the fact that these “birthers” were not given opportunity to take the case to court notwithstanding. “Not proved” is “not guilty”. And it was Herself who came up with this challenge in the first place.
If you cannot dazzle them with your brilliance, then bury them in bull$#!+.
they sound like a bunch of Liberals....blaming someone else for their ineptness
Nobody does delusional like Ted Cruz. LOL!
Ruuuuuuuuuubbeeeeeeeeeeooooooooooooh..............
.....brings ‘em in from Mehhhhickkkkoooo.
No, I don’t think so. Not at all.
o am a should have been Obama.
Delusion runs deep in cruzlandia
Bwahahaha!
Previslu
I wish a Cruz-Rubio ticket had materialized and think it could have succeeded.
LOL! Good idea, Marco!
All Cruz could talk about was facing Trump "head-to-head".
I think if they had tried this, they still would have lost...
Vote Trump
Well, my estimation of Rubio has gone up a notch if he said no to this - and my estimation of Cruz has dipped further.
