A former police sergeant has been held without charges in a federal detention cell in Philadelphia, part of an effort by the authorities to pressure him to decrypt two computer hard drives believed to contain child pornography.
The case reveals yet another battle line for law enforcement and digital privacy advocates over encryption, this time on an Apple computer, not an iPhone.
...
Law enforcement agencies have typically made encryption an issue in high-profile cases involving terrorism or child pornography. In March, President Obama said the United States had already accepted that law enforcement can rifle through your underwear in the search for suspected predators, so there was no reason to treat a persons digital information differently.
If the government has no way into a smartphone, he added, then everyone is walking around with a Swiss bank account in your pocket.

“[t]he right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated”
Quaint old notion, that. It makes Ezra Klein’s head hurt.
Wouldn’t self-incrimination have more to do with this since they could get a proper search order for papers and effects? Can he be forced to self-incriminate by being forced to provide the key?
(I assume that he’s guilty of having the goods on there with that question.)
"No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation."Looks like double violation of the fifth amendment
Held without charges in a jail cell...
Do we even have a Constitution anymore?
>Looks like double violation of the fifth amendment
How quaint. With the other 99.9% OBVIOUS violations (plain English vs. twisted pretzel logic vs. Federalism), you think govt cares of ONE violation?
Next you’ll be telling me govt was instituted to PROTECT the Freedom, Rights and Liberty of We the People /S
Yes. Silly of me to even mention it. Heil 0bama
Hell, I can’t remember half my passwords now.
