Look, for those of us that may have kids in this age group and those that are in admissions in college it is not an unfamiliar topic. Your 17 to 18 yr old is at the younger end of their age for their graduating class? Take a year to mature. Instances I have heard of? A liberal going to Israel for a year and now question the dominant media because what they saw does reflect what the papers say. Quite an awaking before heading off to college. Going on a mission sponsored by your Church for a year. Ice Skaters taking a year to do one of the touring ice shows before heading to the 4 year university. BTW do your research on it, it is a tough slog, those shows.
Again the point is, some kids aren't mature enough, this gives them a chance to sort it out. Wish I would have known about the concept back in the day...
Note colleges do not look unfavorably on it as well, as long as you are not slumming for year, do something that helps you figure it out.....
