Joe Paterno was told as early as 1976 that former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky had sexually molested young boys according to a new report.
A child apparently reported to Paterno that he was sexually abused by Sandusky in 1976. This came to light via a court order during a related insurance coverage case involving Penn State. The line in the court order says the following:
in 1976, a child allegedly reported to PSUs Head Coach Joseph Paterno that he (the child) was sexually molested by Sandusky.
The court order also cites references to incidents in 1987 and 1988 in which former assistant coaches observed inappropriate contact between Sandusky and unidentified children and another 1988 incident that was reported to Penn States athletic director at the time. All of the incidents are reportedly described in victims depositions that are currently under seal.
Pennsylvania Manufacturers Association Insurance Co. is arguing that it should not have to reimburse Penn State for the more than $60 million it has made in Sandusky-related settlements.
Paterno and Penn State apologists have argued for years that the school and the coach knew nothing of Sanduskys activities and that the community as a whole was deceived. But it is getting harder and harder to defend the coach and the school as more allegations come to light. There seem to have been dozens of chances along the way to stop Sanduskys horrific actions if they had just been followed up on.
Paterno family attorney Wick Sollers responded to the latest news:
Over the past four-and-a-half years Joe Paternos conduct has been scrutinized by an endless list of investigators and attorneys.
Through all of this review there has never been any evidence of inappropriate conduct by Coach Paterno. To the contrary, the evidence clearly shows he shared information with his superiors as appropriate.
An allegation now about an alleged event 40 years ago, as represented by a single line in a court document regarding an insurance issue, with no corroborating evidence, does not change the facts. Joe Paterno did not, at any time, cover up conduct by Jerry Sandusky.
Penn States own hired independent investigator, Louis Freeh, found that Paterno and former Penn State president Graham Spanier were aware of the complaints against Sandusky starting in at least 1998. Spanier and two of his former aides have a criminal case pending in which they are accused of failing to report an allegation of abuse by Sandusky in 2001.
Lawrence Lokman, a spokesman for Penn State, claims the university is aware of the latest allegation and that the school will not respond to specific circumstances related to ongoing cases.
Denial is not a river in Egypt. Pedo State needs to be bulldozed to the ground and Paterno’s statue needs to be sent to Ft. Sill to be used as artillery target practice.
Yeah, I know, evidence is a bitch.
Government-funded sports empires like Penn State aren’t going to put the taxpayer-funded gravy train at risk for owning up to such trifles as an adult queer on the payroll raping little boys.
In 10 years at most this sort of thing will be legal and Sandusky will be pardoned if he lives that long.
That’s the kind of government we have now, for the rest of our lives.
Rot in hell Paterno. Pissing on his grave is on my bucket list.
Former FBI Director Louis Freeh did an exhaustive report, for which he was paid a lot of money. I read the report, and as to Joe Paterno, the report is evidence-Freeh. What we have here is unsourced alleged hearsay. I would want to hear an actual witness testify under oath as to matters of which he had actual knowledge.
Joe wasn’t the only one who had to know or at least suspect what was happening. I heard that some players were “wondering” why Sandusky took little boys on trips with the team. Of course they knew. Everybody chose to look the other way. I can’t believe how some still try to defend Paterno and many others at Penn State.
Nonsense. People had to suspect. I even heard one player say that he was uncomfortable with Sandusky taking little boys on trips with him when the team traveled. People chose to look the other way, and Paterno was the worst. He had to know.
I have a problem with child molesters. Joe Pa obviously did not!!
I'll say it again. Glad JoePa is dead....and child molesters should die by SCAPHISM
His crimes, slander, and post-service actions destroyed whatever good he did. Glad JoePa is dead and in hell. F him.
Penn State, and everyone associated with Penn State, should be ashamed of this. There is no defense.
Joe could develop complex schemes and strategies for consistently winning football games against the best teams and top coaches in the country, but he wasn't able to add 2+2 when it came to Sandusky's insatiable appetite for raping young boys.
Some people will believe anything.
Then how did you miss the part where the whole McQueary incident in the Lasch building never would have happened if the Provost hadn’t completely violated and overruled academic standards by giving an Assistant Professor emeritus status, which entitled Sandusky to bring his victims there long after he quit coaching?
That was also amazing evidence that football trumped (and probably still does) all normal university operations and standards. The football program was indeed out of control, enabled by idiot administrators who worship football.
Amen! You said it perfectly.
