Obviously, Humphrey was not elected President, but he ran for the office as a sitting VP and came close to winning in 1968 — as did Al Gore in 2000 in an even closer election.
And if Cruz was interested in almost being elected president then the vice-presidency in a Trump administration would be perfect for him. But I think his sights are set a bit higher than that.
