As Vice Presidents go, Dick Cheney was actually a pretty good choice.

Had Dubya been unable to discharge the duties of the office for whatever reason, then Cheney could assume the position. Nobody would be crazy enough to attempt to assassinate Dubya then, Cheney was his life insurance policy.

And if Cheney had died while in office, Dubya could have been able to be President in more than name only.
