n a post-apartheid context, is a democratic Afrikaner identity possible? Are there other traditions apart from apartheid that can be drawn on in Afrikaner culture that can advance democracy and social justice?
These questions are particularly relevant in South Africa, given that in recent years there has been a heightened contestation over Afrikaner identify, driven by a hardening of whiteness.
When the National Party came to power in 1948 politician JG Strijdom, the apartheid prime minister between 1954 and 1958 who was nicknamed the “Lion of the North”, demanded “eendersdenkendheid”. The Afrikaansword means a condition of thinking the same. It is a collective term as it necessarily requires more than one person to abide by it.
The directive of eendersdenkendheid was founded in apartheid. Opposition to apartheid was as treasonous as refusing to defend your country during a war, hardliner Strijdom told his white, assumed-to-be male audience.
This demand for conformism to a particular ethnic configuration of heteropatriarchal white supremacism — also known as apartheid — permeated Afrikaner nationalism. State power amplified the authoritarian tendency of conformism in Afrikanerdom. Anyone who did not bend the knee was a “volksverraaier”, or traitor to the volk(Afrikaner people).

Agreed. Ted is so often blamed, but he was just a second level cheerleader. It was called the Hart-Celler Act, not the Kennedy Act. And, the Bill originated in thh House, not the Senate.

Unfortunately I don’t expect American’s are capable of overcoming the obstacles required to prevent the same scenario from playing out here in a slightly altered form.
You say that whites are on their own, which is probably true. But you imply that whites will be left alone. I disagree, once black rule starts to fail and they need a scapegoat, they will blame whites.
And their fate will be the same as all scapegoats in totalitarian regimes.
Much of South Africa is theirs. They should stay and keep it forever. Europeans have been in southern Africa about as long as in the Americas. Telling them they should leave is like telling a Connecticut Yankee, in Connecticut, they should go back where they came from.

The author is calling for whites to abandon their tribe, because their tribe is bad, while pointing out that Afrikaners are a white tribe with a tight identity while being part of the bigger, badder white supremicist tribe in Africa’s apartheid.
In short, “your tribe is bad, abandon your identity, well defined white tribe, it hinders other tribes”.
That’s what I have been told by whites there.
The Afrikanners are also marginalized for mostly not using English, which is a choice, and not being English but Dutch, so they can’t use Dominion citizenship to move as easily to the UK, Canada, Australia.
They are South African by birth, and not as readily able to immigrate or assimilate to the Anglosphere. Which makes their high murder rate as small farmers all the worse - because they can’t as easily escape.
Yes. My heart goes out to those people. The world hates them, men, women, and children, regardless of their past or involvement with apartheid.
The world has left them to the wolves with the justification that “this is punishment for their past transgressions in apartheid”.
And we know where this is going to end. There is going to be a blood bath.
Actually, I agree with you. Whites are, by and large, an unappreciated minority in SA. And the income disparity between white and black is a constant problem that will prove a big temptation for black government to try to 'fix' through wealth redistribution. The whites are a soft target.
I don't think I had ever run across the term "heteropatriarchal" before. Derived from three Greek roots, and Aristotle wouldn't have had the slightest idea what it meant.
He understood that the Afrikaners were the core of the infrastructure of So Africa and to drive then out, as a racist buffoon like Mugabe did to the whites in Rhodesia, would be fatal, forever condemning his country to 3rd world status. Mandela was a Zulu w/brains, and incidentally a very good Rugby player.
Don't count the Afrikaners out.
