Best US history books ever.
The Growth of the American Republic: Volume One: Fourth Edition, Revised and Enlarged Hardcover - 1956
by Samuel Eliot and Henry Steele Commager Morison
The Growth of the American Republic: Volume Two 1865-1950 Hardcover - 1951
by Samuel Eliot Morison & Henry Steele Commager (Author), Photos & Illus B&W Maps (Illustrator)
Morison wrote some great books on WW2, especially The Two-Ocean War (naval ops). Commager, if he’s not in your library, it ain’t a library!
I’m now reading Patriot’s History of the U.S. by Schweikert and Allen. It’s comparatively light reading but would serve today’s students adequately. (A few hundred copies per school and watch the brats start the bonfires.)
Morison also wrote what is considered the best one-volume history of the U.S. Navy in WWII, The Two Ocean War. Worthwhile. The first review covers why quite well.
