I agree on what entertainment is doing, and don’t have cable myself. I watch non-fiction on TV when I do watch it, but occasionally will watch a show to see what is being given to the public. And what is happening to Christians is by seduction, and has made me wonder if our modern world might be the “strong delusion” mentioned in the Bible.
Christians have been taking on the world’s viewpoints, “logic,” and values, and so when the world’s propaganda comes along, they largely buy it too.
And so often they are not passing along Christianity to the younger generations, including their own children, because they forget that their Christian “eyes” were formed years ago, so they still see things partly from a Christian perspective and resist some of the antichristian messages today, but the younger generations know nothing else, and see their elders accepting what the world offers.
The Bible says, “Guard your heart.”
Churches and Christian groups often have grown into businesses and marketing, too, and try to look like the world and compete with it, rather than trying to make a Christian path in this world. The world has thrown some new possibilities at us, and we are giving in rather than being like David against Goliath.
It very well might be the case that young people can’t be prevented from following the world and wanting to “experience” it, and in a qualified way parents probably should let them do so in some ways, but the church then also should work on developing spiritual maturity rather adopting the world’s view of protacting adolescence throughout life as much as possible.
Good post. I can't add much other than to say that there are two things that are essential. One, reduce the influence of the present day media as much as possible. One suggestion is to stick to classic movies, television shows and cartoons. For a fraction of the price of cable you can build up a good library of healthy entertainment on DVD or Bluray. Most of it from before the sixties. The other is to homeschool if you possibly can manage it. Between public education and the media children often spend eleven hours a day under liberal influence.
