Famous sufferers from acromegaly include the wrestler Andre the Giant.

In most cases the disease “just happens.”
In the case of Rondo Hatton it is speculated that it was triggered by exposure to mustard gas. This is not a proven fact mind you, just speculation.

Hatton was exposed during his stint with the US Army during WWI in Europe. He also rode with Pancho Villa.

I have always viewed him as a tragic figure.
In youth, voted as the most handsome boy in his high school class.
As an adult, known in the film world as “The Monster Without Makeup.”

WOW....it's AMAZING what FREEPERS know !

Of course I have seen Mr. Hatton in many movies, but what he looked like prior to contacting acromegaly, makes his later appearance heart breaking.
