Trump's Best Move: Kasich for VP
RollCall.com ^ | 04/21/2016 | Jonathan Allen

John Kasich has enough delegates that he can probably put Donald Trump over the top if Trump doesn't win the Republican presidential nomination on the first ballot at the party's convention in Cleveland this summer.

That's reason enough for Trump to put the Ohio governor on his ticket. In fact, he would do well to magnanimously throw the vice presidential nomination open to the convention with the knowledge that his own delegates would secure the spot for Kasich.

But pure palace intrigue is the least of the reasons that the GOP front-runner should run with Kasich. The governor comes from a swing state that Republicans must win to take the presidency, he has crossover appeal with Democrats who watched the Republican debates and mistakenly thought he won every one, he's got both executive and legislative experience and, most important, his selection would signal to both the establishment wing of the GOP and the general electorate that Trump is serious about governing.

I can’t believe he’d pick another white male.

Hillary will pick a Hispanic and will be heavily favored to win. Trump has to ,ale a play got women and Hispanic voters though Hispanics may already be a lost cause.

My secretary is Mex-American and is from a very large family. She is the 12th of 13 children I think. All the siblings, cousins, etc keep track of each other on facebook. There are 50-199 voters on that page, all related, most middle class but not all. The depth of the hatred of Donald Trump on that board cannot be exaggerated. If that group is any indications of Hispanic voters in the country, Trump has set the party back a generation.

It would be part of softening his image to win over general election voters. He also wants to win Ohio...probably the number one reason besides getting necessary delegates that he’d pick Kasich.

Trump wants to win. First winning the primary, then winning the general. The same strategy won’t win both.

Why would Trump pick someone for his VP who’s diametrically opposed to everything he’s campaigned on? That would be a very hard pill to swallow, for all the tens of millions of voters who’ve supported Trump throughout this primary.

Geraldo said Hillary should pick Cory Booker as her V.P. This would set up a “far left black president 2.0” race to take place after Hillary’s reign. I’m sure the party would love to repeat that successful strategy.

Kasich has repeatedly said he doesn’t want to be VP. I was thinking Marco Rubio in an effort to get the Hispanic vote.

Would that be the first time a candidate “moved to the center” for the general election?

Picking the Wicked Witch as your running mate is called suicide. Think Kevin Costner saying “back and to the left.”

He says that at the same time he says he’s going to be the nominee. So not very plausible.

Kasich as VP is the latest liberal fantasy. It ranks up there with the magical second ballot.

How many Republicans does Trump have to pick from who are actually hard-line conservatives? Not very many who have any profile higher than being a Congressman. Cruz looked like the obvious if not the only plausible choice until the Great War started.

My advice would be to double down on the outsider.

Virginia Rometty, CEO of IBM. Go with the idea that he will bring in the best and brightest minds, not a bunch of politicians. No idea of her politics, but no idea of Trump’s either so that shouldn’t matter.

I expect Kasich will be willing to agree with Trump that deportation is okay as long as we let the “good ones” back in quickly.

Trump’s calculation is, if he has to pick a RINO anyway,

You’re also neglecting that Trump may have little choice. If he is short 100 or so delegates on the first ballot, he has to get uncommitted or released delegates from someone else to win on the first ballot. He’ll have no chance on any subsequent ballots. Kasich sells himself as Mr. Pragmatic...he’ll be pragmatic enough to cut that deal.

On top of that, Trump needs Kasich to not drop out NOW so that Trump can win states like Pennsylvania, Indiana or California with a 40-30-30 vote split, and not risk the anti-Trump vote consolidating on one candidate. That’s why this deal is very likely to have already been cut.

Trump has long said he will NOT pick a non-politician as his V.P. Your idea is not in the cards in Trump’s mind at all.

Meant to say...

Trump’s calculation is, if he has to pick a RINO anyway, he may as well pick one that can him a key swing state...Ohio.

So, if Trump’s analyzing this correctly, the only choice may be a Trump/Kasich ticket, or Trump not winning it at all.

He did say he would pick a politician, but he also said he would pay off the debt in eight years. What he says can change quickly.

Anyway, I was just offering my opinion. Picking a politician doesn’t get him anything. Picking another outsider, if a woman and recognized as incredibly competent would be the best way to run against Hillary, the ultimate insider.
