Trump takes back claim he could eliminate national debt

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump this week walked back his assertion that he could eliminate the country's debt after two terms as president.

In an interview with Fortune Magazine published Friday, Trump was asked how his pledge to pay off the $19 trillion debt in 10 years was possible. "No, I didn’t say 10 years," Trump responded. "First of all, with low interest rates, you can think in terms of refinancings, and get it down. I believe you can do certain things to pay off the debt more quickly. The most important thing is to make sure the economy stays strong. You can do it in smaller chunks. You can do it in larger chunks. And you can do it in refinancings."

Trump had, in fact, told The Washington Post editorial board earlier this month that he would pay off the debt in eight years by renegotiating trade deals. The Post called that claim "nonsensical."

His plan was also derided by budget hawks, who called it ridiculous.

Trump added in the Fortune interview that he now wants to pay off a "percentage" of it, but he hasn't decided what that figure would be.

Suddenly, pre-crime in bathrooms at the level of three or four decimal places “Trumps” everything else.

He knows where legal challenges on this kind of thing go in today’s climate. I’d be surprised if it doesn’t end up with a liberal USSC stuffing it down North Carolina’s throat giving them a worse dictum than if they had left it alone.

There’s leveraging of existing value too. Something that Donald knows a lot about.

It’s that or financial collapse, a deep and wide depression followed by a Civil War II. You pick.

Who do you think would pay that tax?

do you think other nations would just do nothing?
Do you think gm or ford would keep their prices the same? Nope their prices would go up 20% the next day...

He will be disappointing greatly all those admiring fans as he changes the tune on all his supposed platform positions.

I don’t know if they would publicly admit they’ve been had.

Some will still be “yeah, but Cruz” right up to the Nov election

You do remember that the first 100 years of this country, the federal government was financed almost entirely from tariffs?

Tariffs in United States history have played important roles in trade policy, political debates and the nation’s economic history. The main goal of the tariff was money to pay the federal budget.[citation needed] Controversy arose over whether manufacturing interests were favored and consumer interests hurt by high tariffs. The 1st United States Congress, wanting a straightforward tax that was not too onerous and easy to collect, passed the Tariff Act of 1789. Treasury agents collected the tariff before goods could be landed, and what became the Coast Guard prevented smuggling. Tariffs were the largest (approaching 95% at times) source of federal revenue until the Federal income tax began after 1913. For well over a century the federal government was largely financed by tariffs averaging about 20% on foreign imports.

You are very ignorant of what is commonly known as a “one-write-system”.....when you do books properly. The howling will get louder as he becomes President and then when the light is turned on the roaches will be scurrying over one another to avoid jail and prosecution....a true “draining of the swamp” that pelosi and Ryan wade in.

i could be wrong but trump has said he will work with them....not drain the swamp

Please note that by 1910 the US was the worlds largest industrial power and largest exporter of goods with very high Tariffs. On the other hand, free trade has destroyed our ability to produce our own goods. We couldn't beat Nazi Germany today if we had to re-fight WW2 because we don't have the industry.

the wanton destruction of the future of a little girl does indeed warrant the greatest threat for little girls, particularly those of my grand-daughters. It trumps everything else as it is personal to me.

the wanton destruction of the unborn like Trump is advocating in changing the GOP platform is another wanton destruction. Executing innocents is not pro-life. Pro-life is saving lives, not ending them due to some ‘circumstance’.

These do enormous damage in de-sensitizing the young of our country as well.

Not a surprise. Trump is now privy to Nat’l data in briefings.

And if you don’t stop the Mexican invasion, who wants Democrat because it is their lunch ticket, how are you going to hope to stop any of this other stuff?

I discern that you want perfection on a silver platter, all the while that leftists are accepting progress on paper plates.

It’s nice to have a politician who doesn’t use a canned speech and thus makes mistakes or dramatic statements. Makes it more interesting. Reporters are supposed to ask questions and find out details. Gives them something to do besides grabbing the candidate and trying to sue the staff.

If those with religious morality and patriotism were in charge, like our Founders intended, all else would take care of themselves.

The lack of morality sees the explosion of the issues you present.

And you are equating pre-crime to crime.

Down to three or four decimal places, the weirdos that will be in women’s rooms will never harm another girl in them... they are too much into their own worlds and the girl may not even know.

In the meantime, molestation remains illegal and will be cracked down on hard not just by police but even by fellow prisoners. And Trump has never spoken against that state of affairs.

I smell hysterics.

The state church was always fragile.

It whitewashed the state. Chattel slavery anyone?

Well, I think it's a bit unfair to characterize the things he says as promises. He's in the middle of an election campaign and people are constantly confronting candidates with questions about all sorts of things. A candidate's responses in the heat of battle should not be treated like wedding vows. Often, there is a need to "revise and extend" one's remarks. These responses only become like promises if they are continually repeated - premeditated. Positions develop over time.
