His history with the gay community is a long one. He donated to charities focused on the AIDS crisis in the late 1980s and early 90s. In 2000, when he briefly considered running for president, he gave an interview to The Advocate, a gay magazine, in which he supported amending the 1964 Civil Rights Act to include a ban of discrimination based on sexual orientation.
It would be simple. It would be straightforward, Mr. Trump said in the interview, adding, Its only fair.
Sixteen years later, gay rights advocates are still trying to persuade Congress to pass a similar measure, but they have struggled to win support, especially from Republicans. The last Republican nominee, Mitt Romney, opposed similar legislation in 2012.
Mr. Trump declined to be interviewed for this article.
His ease with gay people does not seem to be the result of deep soul searching, but, rather, the product of the Manhattan social and political world he has inhabited the past five decades.
I live in New York. I know many, many gay people. Tremendous people, Mr. Trump said in an interview in 2011.
He has been playful at times, such as in 2000, when he and Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani appeared in a skit for a political roast, during which Mr. Trump nuzzled and caressed the mayor, who was dressed in drag.
Friends say he also views gay rights through the lens of a bottom line-minded businessman.
His key concern is, Are you capable and able to do the job I hired you for? And if you are, very little else matters, said Abe Wallach, an openly gay executive at the Trump Organization in the 1990s.

What I don’t get about the men who claim to be women using the women’s bathroom is that at least some of these guys still like women. Bruce Jenner still likes women, the example he actually was given.
I have yet to speak to a blue collar dem that wasn’t horrified with the leadership on this issue, same as the Muslim immigration thing. Almost seems like a lost opportunity for him, give all the right folks another chance to scream that he is Hitler, sweep up the votes from the folks who know this is common sense.
Freegards
Ah, but he’s pretty much indistinguishable from the evil pantsuited hag on all moral issues, the only issues I care about. They’re also the only issues God cares about, and I’ll have to answer to God someday. So I’ll vote Constitution Party, again, if he’s the nominee.
Pivot.
Atlas Shrugged is now nonfiction.
excellent EXCELLENT post Justlittleoleme !!!!
God’s Word says it best of all !!
I'll check back for your reaction when Directive 10-289 is implemented by The Donald or Hillary. New York values will rule this country for the next four years. I'll be going Galt.
I totally agree that this is a leftist issue and conservative politicians should not get sucked up into it. Because however they respond will be used against them to so them as being “intolerant” and what not.
Unfortunately this is an emotionally charged issue for conservatives and so we are falling into the trap.
I agree with Trump’s response the most. Just keep it the way it is and enforce the laws that are on the books.
BTTT!! Agree!
Build the wall...
Gee. Social Conservative issues, must be and election year.
This is the portion of the program when the Democrats start writing articles and asking questions to peel the economic conservatives and social conservatives apart to split the Republican electorate.
I am not voting on ANY SOCIAL ISSUES.
Does not win us the White House, ever! The only thing that can change “Social Issues’ is appointing SCOTUS judges.
Trump has named two he would put forth already.
Can’t appoint judges until we win the White House.
Of course we got Justice Roberts in there.... remember Cruz wrote and Op Ed in support.
That's their problem. Not mine.
People are saying that Trump is going left for the General election. I say he veered right for the Primaries and now is heading back to his natural position. I think there is going to be more and more of this stuff as we go along.

The law on the books in North Carolina and Mississippi at least is that no local ordinance may be passed "legalizing" the concept of the little girls' room as Vacationland for Pervs. Enforce THAT and have it spread to every other state.
If the Wierdo American community of "transgenders" and "transsexuals" and other folks who seem not to have a clue as to what and who goes where don't like it, we don't have an Iron Curtain to keep them in. Sodom and Gomorrah have been unoccupied for some substantial time now and hold sentimental value for them. They can move there and rebuild until the angels come again.
Nah! Trump is a disgrace but Moral Monster Mitt Romney (M3R) is, by far, the worst in show in the entire history of the GOP.
The Civil Rights Act is problematic no matter who it applies to. It violates people's Constitutional right to freedom of association, and any group under its umbrella becomes a protected class of people who can silence the political opposition into submission (as we've seen "minority" activists do over and over again). The problem is, I don't think any Presidential candidate since Barry Goldwater has had the courage to oppose the Civil Rights Act on these grounds.
His views set him apart from conservatism, is more the fact.
I wrote almost the exact same thing yesterday!
I wrote: You have a greater chance of being killed by an illegal alien than seeing a trans person in a public restroom. You have a greater chance your job is outsourced than seeing a trans person in a bathroom. I live in NYC - in Manhattan no less - and I have never seen one in a public bathroom.
Cruz is making a mistake in using this to run to the right of Donald in the hopes it peels off the remaining Evangelicals or some such from Trump. But this is the time to pivot towards the center for the main event. Social conservatives have to realize these pet issues that rile up the base like a red flag don't tend to play well in the general election. Leaving this issue behind is a sacrifice play to concentrate on the more important and relevant issues of illegals/border, unfair trade and Islam.
Yet the gays still hate him.
Because we failed to INSIST on Scott Walker, who had too much class to stick around for the 2016 GOP poo slinging contest.
No doubt....
