Uh oh: Has Cruz been Trumped in trying to win over Pennsylvania’s delegates?

Big news from American Commitment President Phil Kerpen, who’s been hard at work trying to figure out which way Pennsylvania’s delegate candidates are leaning. Why is that important? It’s not just that Pennsylvania will send 71, a large haul, to the convention. It’s the fact that the state has a “loophole primary” where most of those 71 are unbound on the first ballot. Seventeen delegates will be awarded to the winner of the primary next week but the remaining 54 will be determined by elections held the same day — and to make things extra confusing, the ballot won’t show which presidential candidate each would-be delegate is supporting for nominee. If you’re looking to vote for delegates who back Trump, you’d better have done your homework before you go into the booth. ------------------------

How did Team Cruz fall down on the job here? Kerpen points to the fact that delegates had to announce their candidacy months ago, before February 16th, in order to land on next week’s ballot and Cruz’s operation may simply not have been planning for a delegate battle at the time. Remember, Cruz’s strategy initially was to beat Trump across the evangelical south and then settle into a long war with Marco Rubio, who looked to be the emerging establishment champion.

You mean like Cruz under polled in New York, Illinois, Michigan, Florida, New Hampshire, all of the South?

Oh, that's right, Cruz sucked in those States! Remind me how many delegates is Cruz behind Trump? How many millions of votes?

After the next five states, Trump picks up a lot of momentum.

According to Gingrich, Trump will have the 1237 before we hit California.

Aside from the specific candidates this year, I think that many voters in this election season are finding out for the first time how convoluted the process really is - most for the first time. I know that I have been surprised several times at the machinations involved, and all of them appear designed to support the party over the people.

In PA, the primary and “loophole” votes are described as separate events, but occur on the same day. In the loophole elections, voters cast ballots for delegates who are not clearly identified on the ballot as to who they support. Only the commitments of the delegate candidates themselves link their convention votes to the voters’ expressed will once the delegates are selected.

PA may be a special case, but I for one find that the political process as currently constituted for the GOP appears to be a “party uber alles” operation.

These delegates haven’t been engaged in the spirituality of Ted Cruz for the last 10 months.
