I don’t agree with Trump either. He needs to reflect on exactly how this came across.
I don’t think Trump is advocating for special rights formally. Sounds like he’s saying leave things the way they are, which is a bit lame. Sounds like he’s saying when a State makes explicit laws to forbid the restroom crossover, it could be considered discrimination. It very well could be. Who knows? However, it’s still up to each state to figure that out.
He should say it’s a state’s rights issue and each state can choose how they will. He has to respect the law whether he likes it or not.
Bottom line is if a transgender is in the restroom with you likely won’t know it anyway. You have probably been in the restroom with one already and didn’t realize it.
