Giuliani: ‘Cruz Is a Fastball That the Democrats Have Hit Out of the Park Whenever They Want’
Breitbart ^ | April 19, 2016 | Jeff Poor

Posted on 04/19/2016 7:09:53 AM PDT by bobsunshine

Monday on Fox News Channel’s “The Kelly File,” former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani explained why he is voting for Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump over Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)in Tuesday’s New York State Republican presidential primary.

According to Giuliani, it is because Trump has the best shot at defeating Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton in a head-to-head match-up.

“Tomorrow morning, I’ll wake up and go vote for Donald,” Giuliani said. “I’ve urged all my friends to vote for him. I think of the three candidates we have left in the Republican primary, he’s the best candidate and I think he by far has the best chance to beat Hillary Clinton, which is my major objective. If I thought Cruz had a better chance of beating Hillary Clinton, I would support Cruz. And I’ll tell you why — I think Cruz is a fastball that the Democrats have hit out of the park whenever they want. Straight, right-wing, very doctrinaire, very easy to beat, can’t win the Northeast or the West. Trump is a Mariano Rivera cut fastball.”

“He’s unexpected,” he added. “Hillary doesn’t have a rule book for running against Donald Trump. She’s got one for running against Cruz. She’s run against Cruz before.”

I agree with him in the sense that the fundamentals of this election do NOT favor Cruz.

More Milton Friedman lassez-faire economics and more free trade is NOT what the voters want to hear this time around.

Astute baseball analogy by Rudy, who would be a fine candidate in his own right.

There is no doubt in my mind that this is true.

Cruz will be stuck with the traditional republican path to victory. If he could get Kasich on board he might open up Ohio, or if he gets Rubio he might open up Florida.

But that is nothing new...Ohio and Florida both are necessary in the traditional republican path to victory. We know that any deviation from that path even by a very few delegates, and the republican goes down to defeat.

Trump, on the other hand, opens up the possibility of New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and other northeastern states. In addition, his victory in Florida over the hometown boys says he doesn’t need Florida help. He could pick up Ohio with Kasich on board, and the possibility of Ohio would greatly expand.

JMHO, but his blue collar appeal gives him the potential of a renewed Reagan coalition.

I disagree, and I like Rudy and think Trump has a chance against Hillary. With Trump, the numbers are already vastly in her favor. All the democrats have to do is a 24/7 news cycle about his sexist, racist, anti-muslim comments, and the numbers stay negative. Trump will not have the benefit of a compliant media when running against the Democrats.

While, I recognize Cruz’s negatives, too, his negatives are not as baked in. He would have to have a good campaign and do more to personalize like his stint on the Tonight Show last week, but with a good performance and strategy, he may well be much better off in the general. Trump’s biggest plus at this stage is the potential to shift the electoral battles a little bit to put a few states in play that Cruz and any other Republican simply would not have. Both have their own challenges in a general, but I don’t agree with Rudy’s take.
